The Commission for Modern Austrian History is one of the oldest independent historic research institutions in Austria.
For more than a century the Commission is active in the field of historic research. The focus is on the edition of primary sources and on accompanying studies.
The Commission’s Veröffentlichungen der Kommission für Neuere Geschichte (Publications of the Commission for Modern Austrian History) are one of the most prestigious series in the field of history in Austria. So far, 107 volumes have been published. Next to the results of its own projects, the Commission also publishes in its series outstanding monographs and editions in the field of modern Austrian history.
In February 2012 a contract is signed by the University of Innsbruck and the Commission of Modern Austrian History to deepen and tighten the cooperation between them. As the result of the contract several parts of the activities of the Commission (notably the research projects on Zinzendorf, Viennese Congress, Thun, archival cadastres, diaries of Joseph M. Baernreither’s, the administration, and the finance) are now established in the Institute for Historical Research and European Ethnology of the Historical-Philosophical Faculty of the University Innsbruck.
A primary working fields of The Commission consists of digital editing and online publishing. In tight cooperation with University Innsbruck through the contract signed in 2012 we will republish editions out of print online through our website. Furthermore, new editorial projects are planned and carried out according to the guidelines for digital editing.
The Commission for Modern Austrian History is a member of the Federation of Austrian Scientific Societies VWGÖ.
